Description
Well! This requires some explaining. I designed a flag for a flag contest that looks exactly like the original flag. (It’s for Marissa Meyer, btw, author of the Lunar Chronicles: [link] This is, to the best of my abilities, the current United Kingdom / British flag. So, if the task was to design a flag for the futuristic United Kingdom, why did I remake the current one?
…Well… because after a lot of thinking, I believe that the UK flag wouldn’t change. Here’s why:
- The British / UK flag has been in use since 1801. Before that, the colors and the crosses dated back hundreds of years to sacred saints.
- Canada used to be a British colony. Current British colonies, along with many former colonies have the Union Jack in upper left corner.
- Putting the Union Jack into the upper left corner, even for Great Britain, would suggest that the future United Kingdom would be a colony to the past UK.
- With the amount of effort Canada put into getting its independence, Canada would want its flag to represent equality, not the sub-status a colony flag would symbolize, mostly because of the history behind that colonization flag.
- It’s a futuristic world
o There are 6 countries in this futuristic earth: The African Union, The Eastern Commonwealth, The United Kingdom, The American Republic, the European Federation, and Australia.
There are two oddballs in there – two of those names already exist.
• The United Kingdom is a group of countries already
• Australia is not
o Flag changes when it is joined by or joins with other countries
• A group’s flag does not change when it gains a new member (Apple’s logo doesn’t change when they hire a new employee)
Plus, going with the pattern, there should be at least one oddball flag that survived since before WWIV (which created the new country borderlines)
Canada is larger than the entire current United Kingdom
WWIV devastated the planet
Most likely, after WWIV, the larger Canada had more salvageable land and resources left that the minute island nations like Great Britain.
(I assumed, probably incorrectly, for ease) There should be an even number of countries. With an odd number like 5, a majority of 3 counties can conglomerate. With 6, there is a bit more insurance, since it takes longer to achieve a majority and war might be more easily avoided.
• If North and South America in their entirety combined, they and the Eastern Commonwealth would be almost almighty, while the UK without Canada is a pointless pebble in the sea.
o UK needs Canada to compete and maintain the proposed 6-country peace-and-equality.
o Canada accepts
Becomes part of the UK.
Bottom line in my idea is that the United Kingdom already exists. They already have a flag, and their flag doesn’t have a design that changes with each add-on, like the USA’s states=stars factor. If there was a reason why the UK would change their flag… I missed it.
I know this idea is probably stupid and uncreative. But… but, I really support it. And, maybe, somebody’s already turned in this idea to the contest already. Still! I wanted to explain myself and my silly idea.
Also, I did make my own version of the Jack. Even the flat flag up there, I made. I made it to the exact specifications of all of the other Union Jacks out there, but I didn’t just copy it from Google.
Process: I traced a bitmap in Rhino, colored, texturized the 3-D flags (and rendered them). Then, I took a snapshot, which messed up the flat Jack’s pixels, so I edited the flat Jack pixels in Paint.
I thought about combining the Canadian and UK flags, like putting a leaf squat dead in the middle, but then I realized I’d have to add Ireland’s flag, and the others, and in the calamity of all the colors and pieces, this made so much more sense.
Sincerely,
Midget Maddilin
